What to Expect at Your First Yoga Class in Peterborough
Starting something new can feel intimidating, especially if you've never been to a yoga studio before. One of the questions we hear most often at Salti Yoga is:
"What should I expect at my first class?"
The good news? You don't need to be flexible, fit, or know the names of the poses to get started. You simply need to show up.
If you're thinking about trying yoga in Peterborough, here's exactly what you can expect when you walk through our doors.
You'll Be Welcomed
Walking into a new studio can feel overwhelming, so our goal is to make you feel comfortable from the moment you arrive.
When you visit Salti Yoga, one of our team members will greet you, give you a tour of the studio, answer your questions, and help you get settled before class begins.
Whether you're 25 or 75, an experienced athlete or completely new to movement, you'll be welcomed exactly as you are.
You Don't Need to Be Flexible
This is probably the biggest misconception about yoga.
People often tell us,
"I'm not flexible enough for yoga."
The truth is, flexibility is something you develop through practice…not something you're expected to have before you begin.
Yoga meets you where you are today.
Every pose can be modified, and our instructors will always offer options so you can move in a way that feels right for your body.
Wear Comfortable Clothing
You don't need expensive yoga clothes.
Choose something comfortable that allows you to move freely.
Many people wear:
Leggings or shorts
A T-shirt or tank top
Athletic clothing they already own
You'll practice barefoot.
What Should You Bring?
One of the nice things about visiting Salti Yoga is that you don't need much.
We provide:
Yoga mats
Towels
Props
Change rooms
Rainfall showers
Simply bring a water bottle and an open mind.
Arrive a Little Early
We recommend arriving about 10–15 minutes before your first class.
This gives you time to:
Meet your instructor
Tour the studio
Ask questions
Settle onto your mat without feeling rushed
What Happens During Class?
Every class is a little different, but most include:
Gentle breathing exercises
Guided movement
Stretching
Balance work
Relaxation at the end of class
Don't worry if everyone around you seems to know what's happening.
Your instructor will guide you every step of the way.
It's Okay to Take Breaks
Yoga isn't about pushing yourself until you're exhausted.
It's about listening to your body.
If you need to:
Rest
Drink water
Skip a pose
Modify a movement
That's completely okay.
In fact, learning to listen to your body is one of the most valuable parts of the practice.
Expect to Feel Different Afterwards
Many new students are surprised by how they feel after just one class.
You may notice:
Less tension in your shoulders
More energy
Better posture
A calmer mind
Improved sleep that night
A sense of accomplishment
You might even discover muscles you forgot you had!
